Fleming repeatedly described him using both those terms, and he works for the British secret services. I don't think a *fictional* secret agent needs to be of the same stamp or tone as one in a le Carre novel to be one, or we'd be discounting half of the genre since around 1900. And I think Fleming has been the predominant force in spy fiction of the last few decades.

But I think we're talking at cross-purposes. Judging by a comment you just made on another article, and the fact that this comment doesn't really apply to this article but another one, I suspect you're not as interested in this topic as in pointing out how inappropriate you feel Daniel Craig is for the role of James Bond. I don't agree, myself. I think he's been brilliant, and a shot in the arm for a series that was running out of ideas. That's why I think Casino Royale was such a mess of a movie and QOS was even worse - the producers seem to think the series is about a tough gritty spy and so they cast a thus in a tux - Bond is about wish fulfilment, fantasy, Fleming's idea of the perfect male. Postmodern Bond is absolute rubbish and does away with all that was good about the concept.Gary Dobbs/Jack Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10935686140719743351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3138728502354978457.post-83971198893075229732010-08-23T03:45:29.460+02:002010-08-23T03:45:29.460+02:00A bit ironic, no? ;-)A bit ironic, no? ;-)Matthew Blanchettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03829163626544348823noreply@blogger.com
